From Pismo Beach to San Miguel, San Luis Obispo County has a variety of campgrounds with camping at the beach to camping in the mountains and lakes. There are State Parks and private campgrounds that offer both tent camping and RV camping. Find campgrounds in the list below.

The San Simeon Creek Campground has trails to hike and the beach is a short hike away. A must see while you are there is to go see the Elephant Seal Rookery a short drive north and Hearst Castle.

Washburn Campground has hiking trails and is a short hike to the beach. The Elephant Seal Rookery is a short drive north of the campground as well as Hearst Castle.

Morro Strand State Beach Campground is right by the beach. Some popular things to do are surf fishing, windsurfing, kite flying and beach walking.

Morro Bay State Park Campground is next to a lagoon and a natural bay. Morro Rock is a short walk nearby. There is surf fishing, beach walking, birdwatching and sailing at the beach. Visit the park museum with exhibits about Native American life, cultural history, oceanography, geology and natural features of the area. The park has a marina and an 18 hole golf course.

Cerro Alto Campground is off Highway 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero in a canyon with a seasonal creek. The popular Cerro Alto Trail starts from here for hikers, mountain bikers and horsebackriders.

North Beach Campground has a variety of things to do with the beach right by such as the Monarch Butterfly Grove hiking trail and several other trails, swimming, surf fishing, horseback riding and Pismo Beach is the only California beach where vehicles are permitted.

Campsites-camping on the beach is allowed south of Post 2 on the beach and in the open dune area. Vault toilets and chemical toilets are available, camping area maybe restricted periodically by the Arroyo Grande Creek, high tides, heavy rains and blowing sand may determine whether you can drive down the beach without getting stuck, 4 wheel drive vehicles recommended to access the site.

The Oceano Dunes State Recreational Area Campground has 5 ½ miles of beach and sand dunes on 3,600 acres open for vehicles and camping. It is a very popular beach and the only California beach that allows vehicles on the beach. Surfing, swimming, surf fishing, horseback riding and birdwatching are popular activities also.

Avila Hot Springs Campground has a large swimming pool for family fun, a mineral hot springs to soak in, a game room, and the Bob Jones Trail, a popular hiking trail and bicycle rentals. The beach is minutes away as well as a golf course.

Montana de Oro is on 8,000 acres of scenic beaches, mountains, streams and canyons. The campground is just a short walk to Spooner’s Cove, a popular beach with many unique rock formations and a sandy beach. There are many trails to hike from easy trails by the coast to strenuous trails to the mountaintops. A variety of trails with trails for horses, mountain biking, trails for backpackers, there is sure to be a trail for your liking.

Lopez Lake has 22 miles of shoreline with lake temperatures around 7o degrees. There is boating, fishing, hiking, camping, equestrian trails, mountain biking, zip-lining, mustang water slides and picnicking. Something for everyone.

Santa Margarita Lake was created in 1941 and supplies drinking water to San Luis Obispo. No swimming is allowed as it is used as drinking water. There is boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking and camping on thousands of acres of open space.

Lake Nacimiento Campground has 6 campgrounds from primitive to RV with hookups. It is an 18 mile long lake and the campgrounds have wonderful big trees for shade and the beautiful lake for boating, swimming , water skiing and fishing and has lots of fingers for finding private places.
